What "top rope" means in rock climbing

Top rope is a style of rock climbing in which the rope runs from an anchor at the top of a climb through a carabiner attached to the climber's harness. The belayer takes up slack in the rope as the climber ascends, so that in the event of a fall, the climber only falls a short distance. Top roping is a safe way of climbing as compared to lead climbing, in which a climber ascends without a rope going up to an anchor at the top of the climb.
