What "runout" means in rock climbing

In rock climbing, "runout" refers to a section of a climb where the distance between points of protection (e.g. bolts or cams) is farther apart than usual. This means that if a climber were to fall, they would fall a greater distance before being caught by their last point of protection. As a result, runout sections can be more dangerous as a fall could result in a potentially serious injury. Climbers must assess and weigh risk when deciding whether to attempt a climb with extensive runout sections.
