What "debit" means in finance

A debit refers to an entry on the left side of an accounting ledger that indicates an increase in assets, expenses, or losses, or a decrease in liabilities, revenues, or gains. It is used to record the receipt of money or the payment of money, depending on the context. A debit is also used to represent the charge or deduction made to a bank account or a credit card to reduce its balance.
