What "zugzwang" means in chess

Zugzwang is a situation in which a player is forced to make a move that will weaken their position, or one in which any move they make will result in a disadvantage. Essentially, it is a situation where a player would be better off not having to move at all. Zugzwang often arises in the endgame, where there are fewer pieces on the board and fewer options for each player. The concept of zugzwang is important to chess strategy, as players strive to create situations where their opponent is forced into a disadvantageous position.
