What "gambit" means in chess

A gambit is a chess move in which a player sacrifices material (usually a pawn) with the hope of achieving an advantageous position. The word "gambit" comes from the Italian word "gambetto," which means "to trip up". Gambits can be risky, as they require the player to give up some material and rely on positional play to gain an advantage. However, they can also be very effective in catching opponents off guard and gaining a quick advantage.
