What "en passant" means in chess
En passant is a move where a pawn can capture an opposing pawn that has just advanced two squares from its starting position, and landed on the same file as the capturing pawn. The capturing pawn moves diagonally to the square that the opposing pawn skipped over, and removes it from the board as if it had only advanced one square. En passant is a French phrase meaning "in passing". This rule was introduced to prevent pawns from bypassing other pawns without risk of capture.
