What "checkmate" means in chess

Checkmate is a position in which a player's king is under attack (in check) and there is no legal move to escape the attack. This results in the game ending with a win for the opponent who has checkmated the other player. It is the ultimate goal in chess, achieved by placing the opposing king in an inescapable position of threat.
