What "check" means in chess

A check is a move that threatens the opponent's king with capture, and it must be responded to immediately. The opponent must either move their king out of danger, block the attack, or capture the piece delivering the check. If the king cannot escape or be protected from the attack, the game ends in checkmate, resulting in a win for the attacking player.
