What "shot clock" means in basketball

A shot clock in basketball is a time limit of 24 seconds in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for a team to make a shot attempt. This rule was introduced to speed up the game and prevent teams from holding the ball for long periods of time. If a team fails to make a shot within the time limit, possession of the ball is awarded to the opposing team.
