What "goaltending" means in basketball

In basketball, goaltending is the act of interfering with a shot on its way down towards the basket or while it is above the rim. This can occur by a player from either team touching the ball after it has already made contact with the backboard or if the ball is still on its upward trajectory towards the rim. Goaltending is considered a violation and the opposing team is awarded points depending on the situation.
