What "basket" means in basketball

In basketball, a basket refers to the hoop which is mounted up high on a flat board at either end of the court. The objective of the game is to put the ball through the opponent's basket while preventing them from scoring on your own basket. A successful ball through the basket results in two or three points, depending on where the shot was taken from.
