What "stolen base" means in baseball

A stolen base is a term used in baseball to describe when a baserunner advances to the next base without the aid of a batted ball. This is typically done by running from one base to another while the pitcher is in the act of delivering the ball to home plate. A successful stolen base requires good timing and speed on the part of the baserunner and a slow delivery by the pitcher or a well-timed jump by the runner.
