What "on deck" means in baseball

In baseball, "on deck" refers to the player who is next in line to bat, after the current batter. The on deck player usually stands in a designated area just off the field and prepares to bat, such as stretching and taking a few practice swings. The on deck player is typically announced by the umpire or scorekeeper so that all players and the audience are aware of who is up next to bat.
