What "home plate" means in baseball

In baseball, "home plate" refers to the pentagonal rubber plate where the batter stands and where the ball must be hit for a run to be scored. The plate is situated at the back of the infield, in alignment with the center of the pitcher's mound. To score, a baserunner must touch home plate while it is in possession of the catcher. Home plate is often considered the most important position on the field as it is the ultimate destination for a batter and the point at which a game is won or lost.
