What "airmail" means in baseball

In baseball, "airmail" refers to an errant throw that is made way over the intended target. The term comes from the idea of sending something through the air at a great distance, similar to how a letter is sent through airmail. Airmail throws are often the result of a fielder trying to make an overly aggressive or rushed play, and can result in the opposing team gaining extra bases or even scoring runs.
